FSMA
started operations in the rural communities surrounding the area
of San Cristobal Province. This is a large province directly due
west of Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic (as
well as a province in itself). During the initial period of
development (2004 -- 2006) of the institution, work was directed
towards increasing the depth and breadth of its reach along the
province's total area. Plans for later on were to move on to the
southwest into the surrounding provinces of
Peravia and
Azua and northward into the Monte
Plata Province
FSMA
worked to specially identify the poorest of the poor families in
each community of the Provinces. These people are primarily
dependent on the piecework they perform. The objective of the
foundation's program is to reach and give the entrepreneurs of
each community access to credit, thus empowering them to use
their God given talents to hopefully liberate their families
from extreme poverty. In order to attain this purpose, FSMA
uses a very efficient process of poverty level evaluation,
based upon the living conditions, number of dependents,
principal sources of income, and the assets held by the
potential members of the program. Particular attention is given
to assure the programs' outreach to the relative poorest members
of the community in which they live.
